About Seaventures

Founders Bob Lohrman and Ken Nielsen, both of whom are U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Masters (100-ton certification), have a combined 100+ years of experience in the commercial and sport fishing industry, with over 40 years conducting scientific research, environmental monitoring, and collection projects. They have successfully participated in thousands of projects throughout the southern California Bight, including previous SCCWRP Regional Surveys; Montrose Settlement Restoration Project for NOAA; numerous surveys for the Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and San Diego; and many other programs.

In 1975 on a 16’ skiff, Bob Lohrman and Ken Nielson started Seaventures Inc with their first contract taking water samples inside Dana Point Harbor and at the discharge pipe for the San Juan Creek Sanitation plant for the local sanitation district. In 1977, the discharge pipe was extended a mile offshore and Seaventures had a larger custom 18’ skiff with Loran C navigation built. With this bigger skiff, Bob and Ken decided to supplement their monthly environmental sampling by fishing commercially for California Spiny Lobsters.

For the next 25 years Seaventures fished lobsters and became more involved with Southern California environmental work and ocean monitoring. They purchased two 25’ Farallon boats, “Con Suerte” and “Mas Suerte” as their work expanded. Seaventures became centrally involved with the monitoring for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Plant. In 1988, they purchased a 36’ Vega and named it “Early Bird” after the legendary San Clemente bait boat to meet the needs of the further expanding environmental business. Then in 1998, they built the perfect research vessel, “Early Bird 2”, on a 42’ Vega hull and began to support the Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, and San Diego environmental programs.

Their commercial lobster fishing days came to an end in 2001 due to the increasing demand for environmental services. Today the current owners, Steve LaMothe and Chris Clark, continue to provide ocean environmental services to numerous public and private agencies and carry on the reliable reputation and unmatched customer service of Seaventures Inc.
